Altered Books

Using old hardcover books that were going to be discarded, images from the internet, one purchased book, and a variety of odd materials I had in the art room–X-acto knives, glue, binder clips, markers, magazines, tape, a drill, ribbon, fabric, string, yarn, ribbon, chalks, etc.–we jumped into the world of altered books.

One student opted to do a series of drawings to illustrate favorite song lyrics:

One student opted to fold the pages of his book to form a word:

One ambitious student decided to transform the pages of his book into a sculpture project:

This student added a little mystery to her project with a book featuring Sherlock Holmes:

How about a movie theater (complete with seats!) showing a 3-D feature film?

After this special unit, making altered books remained a “choice” activity for students who had finished their major projects:
