{"id":1497,"date":"2023-03-11T23:42:17","date_gmt":"2023-03-12T04:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/?p=1497"},"modified":"2023-03-11T23:42:17","modified_gmt":"2023-03-12T04:42:17","slug":"sacred-circles-tibetan-mandala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/sacred-circles-tibetan-mandala\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacred Circles: Tibetan Mandala"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the first offering of &#8220;Sacred Circles,&#8221; it was our incredible good fortune to discover that a local art museum was hosting an exhibit entitled &#8220;The Mystical Arts of Tibet.&#8221; Also, Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery were at the museum creating a sand mandala! We were able to quickly arrange a field trip, and I was given permission to photograph the monks as they worked on their sacred circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"360\" height=\"317\" src=\"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-222.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-222.png 360w, https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-222-300x264.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite all of my research for this unit (which included learning about the mandalas of Tibet), I had no idea just how breathtakingly beautiful and richly colorful this process would be!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"432\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-223.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-223.png 432w, https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-223-300x205.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monks, dressed in burgundy robes trimmed in purple, worked silently. The only sound was the scraping of a metal rod against the\u00a0<em>chak-pur<\/em>&#8211;a traditional metal funnel which holds the colored sand. The vibration causes the sand to flow smoothly onto a platform on which the design had been outlined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"432\" height=\"373\" src=\"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-224.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-224.png 432w, https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-224-300x259.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resting their arms on small, rectangular cushions, the monks moved around the circle to work on specific areas of the growing mandala. Solid areas were blocked in first, and then intricate designs were drawn into the sand with one of the metal tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"432\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-225.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-225.png 432w, https:\/\/www.art-rageous.net\/Art-Rageous3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image-225-300x229.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the ornate lines had been sketched in the sand, the\u00a0<em>chak-pur<\/em>\u00a0was used to apply contrasting colors of sand on top of the solid layers.
