Drawing – Charcoal Portraits

Students in my Art 2 – Honors Art classes completed some amazing (and often award-winning) charcoal portraits over the years. They used a grid to transfer information from the photograph they were working from to their paper, starting with a light sketch in pencil. Some students opted to draw celebrities, and some chose to do self-portraits. Creating drawings in this challenging medium that featured strong, dramatic contrast was an objective for all students. Here are a few examples of their work.
