Advanced Art students studied the work of artist Ann Kullberg and practiced the techniques reference in tutorials found in her books, “Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step” and “Texture in Colored Pencil.”
Drawings using these techniques are called “paintings” because they start with dry pencil “washes,” and then use layers of colors which are burnished with colorless blenders to create a smooth finish. Prismacolor pencils are perfect for this technique because of their soft, almost creamy texture, and their rich, vibrant colors. Here are a few examples of colored pencil paintings produced by my students over the years, along with a short video that demonstrates the blending process.
