Subject/Title: Oaxacan Animal Art
Grade Level: All Ages

Objectives: To increase students’ awareness of Mexican art forms.
Goals: Students will produce a large crayon drawing of an animal that incorporates the colors and patterns found in Oaxacan art.

Materials:
Examples of Oaxacan animal carvings, in color
Pencils, erasers, practice paper
12 x 18 white sulphite paper
Crayons
Scissors
Glue
22 x 28 black poster board

Procedure:

1. Show examples of Oaxacan animal art sculptures. Ask students what is unusual about these carvings (bright colors and unusual patterns).
2. Pass out practice paper and pencils, having students plan a large drawing of a Oaxacan-style carving.
3. When pleased with preliminary drawing, students will transfer to large white sulphite paper, drawing lightly in pencil.
4. Begin coloring, being sure to include bright colors and patterns.
5. When finished, carefully cut out drawing and mount on black poster board, using glue.
6. Have students write a paragraph that tells a little about Oaxacan art, and give their drawing a title.

Evaluation:
1. Following directions 0-25 points
2. Use of class time 0-10 points
3. Understanding of concept 0-20 points
4. Craftsmanship 0-25 points
5. Completion of project 0-20 points

Note: Allow 2-3 days for completion of project.
